What is double glazing?
Double glazing refers to a window that is made up of two panes of glass. The main component of a window is the double glazed sealed unit, which is also known as an insulated glass unit (IGU) that sits in a PVCu, aluminium or timber frame.
How does double glazing work?
Double glazing works by creating an airtight gap that insulates against heat transfer between inside and outside temperatures. The two panes of glass are sealed in a unit that is filled with gas that is separated by a spacer bar. The space between the glass panes creates an air gap that slows down heat transfer – it doesn’t trap heat, but it does slow down the movement of the heat to reduce heat loss in your home.
How does double glazing reduce heat loss?
Double glazing keeps your home cosy and warm through the insulation of the air contained within the sealed unit. As cold air from outside hits the external pane of glass, the pane of glass transfers the temperature to the argon gas layer. Argon gas has a reduced thermal transfer rate in comparison to air and slows down the conduction of heat between two differing temperatures.
How does double glazing reduce condensation?
Condensation occurs when moisture heavy air meets a cold surface, such as a windowpane. For example, when you boil a kettle, cook food or have a hot shower, the air becomes filled with more moisture than usual – this is why you’ll find that your kitchen and bathroom mirrors and windows are the steamiest.
Double glazing helps to reduce condensation on the inside of your window because the glass isn’t as cold as a single glazed window would be. The air gap in double glazing helps to keep the internal pane of glass closer to room temperature. The difference in temperature stops the water vapour reaching dew point and forming condensation on the glass.
