Get your home ready for summer
No one loves summer as much as us Brits do. After being teased with the sun all year, when it finally comes out in full swing, we embrace it like a long-lost family member.
We adore the warmer weather, longer days, brighter skies and more opportunities to spend time with friends and family.
To help you get your home in Derby summer ready, we’ve put together a guide on what you can do in your home to make the most of weather.
Let there be light
The presence of the sunshine transforms homes into lighter, brighter living spaces. Anywhere that it can peek through is illuminated by natural light, so it’s important to make sure you’re letting in as much light as possible.
Windows are the gateway to allowing the light to flood through your home, and thanks to modern technology, windows can be made with slim frames and larger glazed areas, giving the sunshine even more space to shine through.
While modern PVCu windows are a great choice, state-of-the-art aluminium windows have sleek, slim frames and Lumi frame-less windows have no raised, mounted frames for a stunning glazed feature.
As well as windows, widespan doors offer a great way to bring masses of light into your home. When installed on external walls, widespan doors such as bifold doors and sliding doors, create walls of glass for the sunlight to flood through, bringing light to every corner of the room.
If you’d like to create a room dedicated to making the most of the sunshine, choose from a conservatory or orangery. Conservatories are almost fully glazed rooms, with a minimum of 75% of glass using glass walls and a glass roof. Modern orangeries feature large windows, a Skypod roof lantern and often include widespan doors.
This gives you a living space filled with light, creating an inviting environment for both relaxing and entertaining.
Make the most of the great outdoors
During summer, the garden becomes an extension of your living space. You begin to use the outdoors more, as the barbeque and garden furniture reappear.
Bringing the family together again as you can dine alfresco makes mealtimes much more exciting.
It also means you can entertain friends and family more, transforming your home into the summer party hot spot.
During the summer, you want to make sure that your garden is used more by your children who love being outside in the sunshine.
But whether it’s sunny or not, you can make the most of your garden using widespan doors.
Bifold and sliding doors give you a phenomenal opening to the outdoors, providing a seamless, easy access outside to help merge your home and garden for indoor-outdoor living.
It makes it easier to decide to dine outside, as your widespan doors will be open during the summer, and it means there’s no struggle moving food and drinks between your kitchen and garden.
Widespan doors show off your garden and it creates a great incentive to encourage children to put down their devices and rush outside.
Let the fresh air in
Summer breeze really does make us feel fine! There’s nothing like the fresh summer air wafting through the home.
When it’s hot outside, you want to make sure that your home doesn’t overheat or feel stuffy.
That’s why ventilation is so important.
Windows are often kept open during the summer days, helping to keep the air flowing throughout the house.
You want to make sure that your windows are strong, sturdy and durable enough to withstand a lot of use during the summer. PVCu windows are the top low maintenance choice as the frames simply require a wipe down every once in a while to keep looking brand new. The frames used in aluminium windows are long lasting and resistant to rotting, corroding, warping, twisting, fading or expanding. As Lumi windows have internal frames, they won’t ever need to be maintained and they are always protected against the outside elements.
Top tip: tilt and turn windows are the best choice for optimum ventilation. The cleverly designed windows can either tilt to slightly open at the top or turn inwards for a fully opened window. This allows you to choose just how much ventilation and air flow you would like!
